The struggle for equity and justice for the Filipino World War II
veterans did not arise for a simple reason that the Filipino veterans needed
aid from the government. Veterans equity is about advocating for "equality"
of treatment as US veterans. The fact that the Filipino veterans were
divested of US veterans status after World War II is an insult and an
injustice to those who have fought for our freedom and democracy.
Since 1993 the Equity Bill was introduced in Congress and no success has
been achieved to have it passed. Last year, the bills that were passed into
law addresses Filipino veterans access to health care benefits and limits it
to residents and/or citizens of the United States. While these legislation
may have benefited "certain" veterans, it did not rectify the error
committed by the enactment of the 1946 Rescission Act. These are piecemeal
legislation intended only for some veterans and only for some pieces of
benefits.
The Filipino veterans are not begging for a piece of pie. The Filipino
veterans are seeking justice! There is not enough time left for the Filipino
veterans to be dealing with another health care legislation. The Filipino
veterans should be treated equally and their dignity restored.
